Appliance Price Protection: Reconcile Stock Before a Price Cut

Prepare a stock cut-off, eligibility rule and reconciliation process before offering price protection on ageing appliance inventory.

A price reduction can leave dealers holding stock bought at the old price. If the brand announces the cut before deciding how existing inventory will be treated, commercial uncertainty can stop replenishment and turn routine claims into a network-wide dispute.

Price protection is a negotiated commercial arrangement. This article proposes an operating process; the actual obligations depend on the parties' agreement and should be checked by the relevant commercial and legal advisers.

Take a verifiable stock snapshot

Set a clear cut-off date and time. Request SKU, quantity, serial number where available, purchase invoice, location and stock condition. Distinguish saleable stock from display units, damaged products, goods in transit and returns awaiting inspection.

Reconcile the snapshot against brand dispatches and the distributor's outward sales. A dealer's spreadsheet alone is insufficient if the same units also appear in a distributor claim. Preserve the source files so later adjustments have an audit trail.

Decide what qualifies

State whether protection applies to all eligible unsold stock or only units bought during a defined window. Specify treatment of inter-branch transfers, bundled products, special-price orders and units already supported by another scheme.

For a hypothetical ₹1,000 eligible price reduction across 40 qualifying units, the provisional claim is ₹40,000. If five units were already sold before the cut-off, they should not remain in an unsold-stock claim unless the policy expressly covers them. Keep that distinction visible rather than silently changing the quantity.

Connect support to stock movement

A credit note can restore economics without solving ageing. Agree a sell-through action for older units: reposition the display, correct unavailable accessories, adjust the assortment or run a defined consumer promotion. Avoid repeatedly sending new stock into a location that cannot move the old range.

Track protected units sold, remaining eligible units and actual consumer selling price. This helps distinguish a demand problem from a claim-processing problem.

Close the loop with finance

Publish the submission deadline, required documents, review owner and settlement method. Give partners a way to challenge rejected quantities with evidence. Reconcile approved claims to issued credits and ledger balances before calling the exercise complete.

Review the policy after the first cycle. Repeated uncertainty around cut-off stock often signals weak secondary-sales data, not merely an imperfect scheme.

See inventory stock-level reduction for the wider planning problem and channel margin waterfalls for avoiding duplicated funding. Discuss an inventory review before a price correction becomes a recurring substitute for assortment discipline.
